How to deal with toxic debates in social media

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time debating people online about different social issues, political issues. And I got to a point where I was just like, so disappointed by the lack of impact that I had with all my conversations.

So eventually I gave up. I realized that I was doing something that was requiring so much energy, but was producing no impact on the world. So I decided to shift my energy to other things.

Energy is a finite resource. I only have so much of it. So when I spend my energy on one thing, I’m not spending that energy on something else.

So I wonder, what it is for you that you’re spending a lot of energy on without getting much in return?

To be clear, I’m not saying give up on all the causes that matter to you. What I’m saying is that there’s a difference between worrying and doing something. I think it’s a good idea to decide if we’re in or out, right?

If we’re in, what are we doing that is going to actually create a positive impact? If we’re out, then what are we going to spend that energy on?

There are so many things that are broken in our world and we’re not going to fix them all. So I think that learning how to pick our battles and being very intentional about how we spend our energy is one of the most important things we can do with our lives.
